this is going to be a long post (copy pasta from a private sites wiki)

Flash Cart
This device is usually the same size as a regular GBA cart, but sometimes bigger, or in some cases even smaller than a GBA cart (this is so it does not stick out all when used with a DS Lite). Most of the carts use some type of removable media, such as SD, Mini-SD, Micro-SD, or CF cards. Some have onboard storage space that does not require you to buy a separate memory card.
[edit] Slot 1 Flash Carts

These flashcarts go in the first slot (NDS) of your DS. These do not require a pass device, but since they're in the first slot they cannot play .gba files (without addons, of course!)
[edit] DS Xtreme

A slot 1 card with 512MBs of space. A 2 gigabyte version is coming out, but this flashcart is generally a waste of money (over $100 lol) since you can get better flashcarts with more space for WAAAAAAAAAAY cheaper.
[edit] Super Card DS

The Supercard team's attempt at a slot 1. It was rushed out to be the first efficient & cheap slot 1 card using microSDs. For that sole reason this is pretty shitty and doesn't match up to the slot 2 Supercards.
[edit] R4/M3 Simply

The best slot 1 cards out, have great compatibility and features. The M3 Simply is a carbon copy of the R4 (seriously, even the hardware is the same) except for the name and OS. It also recieves updates like, 3 days later so it's best off getting an R4.
[edit] M3/G6 Real

Slot 1 cards that can play GBA games. Not much info has been released on these as of now.
[edit] Slot 2 Flash Carts

These flashcarts go in the second slot (GBA) of your DS. All of these require a pass device to be accessed through DS mode (to play .nds files, otherwise they just play GBA games)
[edit] M3

A very popular flash cart. It has very good DS compatibility as well as GBA compatibility. It is the most expensive of all the flash carts, however not technically the best. Comes in CF (Sticks out of GBA slot a lot), SD (Sticks out only a little), Mini-SD versions (size of a normal GBA game), and microSD (fits perfectly in the DSlite but does not work in DSphat since it's too small).
[edit] Supercard

This brand of carts have about the same DS compatibility as the M3. It is quite a bit cheaper than the M3 and gets the same thing accomplished, so it's technically the best slot 2 card. A very popular flash cart. It has very good DS compatibility as well as GBA compatibility. It's generally the cheapest and most efficient slot 2 card. Comes in CF (Sticks out of GBA slot a lot), SD (Sticks out only a little), Mini-SD versions (size of a normal GBA game), and microSD (fits perfectly in the DSlite but does not work in DSphat since it's too small).
[edit] EZ-Flash IV & EZ4 Lite TF

Has good GBA and DS compatibility, but does not have a Real Time Clock mechanism, making it difficult to play a few GBA games (DS games run off of the DS's clock) About the same price as the Supercard. Recently released a version specifically for the DS lite that does not stick out of the DS Lite's GBA slot at all. This version uses the fairly new Micro-SD cards. Also comes in a Mini-SD version that is the same size as a GBA cart.
[edit] G6

This brand comes with onboard storage so you don't need to buy a memory card. It is made by the same group that makes the M3. Their cart sizes are usually measured in gigabits (8 bits = 1 byte). They have also released a version that does not stick out of the DS Lite's GBA slot at all, and also covers the little gap that the EZ4 Lite leaves open on the side. This particular cart comes in a 4 gigabit (512 megabytes) version. There are also GBA size carts that come in 1 gigabit, 2 gigabit, and 4 gigabit sizes. You're better off getting an M3/Supercard, though. They can hold more space and get the same thing done for a cheaper price.
[edit] Media Card

This is where the actual files are stored. Some type of memory card reader is required to transfer files from your computer to the card. The memory card is then inserted into the flash cart. The write/read speed of the memory card determines if you will experience any slowdown while playing games. Even with average cards, though, there is very little, if any slowdown ever.
[edit] Pass Device

Initially, the DS does not allow code for DS games to be run from the GBA slot. A pass device bypasses this and allows it. Pass devices used to be large and bulky but are now the same size as a DS card. There are 3 passme devices currently in existence. The first is the original passme which only works with DSs that have firmware version 3 or lower. The only DSs who have this are the ones around the time of release, and since this device does not work with newer DSs, it has become obsolete. The second device is the passme2, this device is essentially the same as passme1 only it works with all current DSs (including the Lite); it also needs to be coded to a specific DS game as to break through the systems Nintendo implemented to stop the old one. Currently the M3, Supercard and a few other companies have their own versions of passme2, they're all fundamentally the same, and the M3's even allows you to program the passme yourself. The third and final passme device was released recently and is also known as nopass. This device is essentially a ds-cart shaped device that you just plug and play. With the new Passcard3/Superkey out now, flashing the DS is generally not needed since the card/key fits perfectly in the slot and requires nothing else to run. The Passcard3/Superkey can also be used to flash, so it is not necessary to get a passme2 if you want to flash. The nopass also has different companies producing products that are all the same, the Max Media Launcher and the m3/supercard versions are all essentailly the same.
[edit] OPTIONAL: Flashing your DS

Flashing your DS replaces the firmware with a hacked one that allows DS code to be run from the GBA slot. Thus, you would not need a pass device. In order to flash your DS, though, you need a pass device of some sort. This is highly recommended because a pass device can sometimes ruin your DS's DS cartridge slot. Flashing your DS also allows you to remove the health warning screen.

Although you generally need a Pass device to do this the first time, it is well worth it. Plus, you can use that Pass device to spread the Flash love to your friends.

IT IS HIGHLY RECCOMENDED TO FLASH YOUR DS

If your DS were to ever become bricked, it can be fixed with Flashme.
[edit] Checking the Firmware Version

Different firmware versions have different behaviors if a DS Game Card is ejected during Pictochat [1]. To determine your DS firmware version, follow these steps: Insert an authentic Nintendo DS Game Card into SLOT-1 of your Nintendo DS. Turn on DS (hold Start if you have autostart enabled in the settings). Enter Pictochat. Enter any chat room. Eject the Game Card from the DS.

Result: v1: Pictochat hangs

v2: two grayish blue screens

v3: two dark green screens

v4: two golden yellow screens

v5: two magenta screens (DS lite units have this)

v6: two dark blue screens (un-confirmed new DSes have this)

iQue: two dark green screens
[edit] Mini-FAQ

* How many DS ROMs can I fit on a 1 Gig?

Over 9000. A DS game can be between 8 and 128 MB, so you do the math. The average size is generally 64MBs, though.

* Can flashing damage my DS?

Yes, but the only person who could fuck up the flashing process is Michael J. Fox. Because of Parkinson's.

* Where can I get DS ROMs?

See below.

* How expensive is <insert combination of flash cart and console here>?

This is a fairly simple calculation. Check out the "Retailers" section. Find a flash cart there. Now add that to the retail price of a DS/Lite. Bam.

It's usually cheapest to get an R4 + 1gb microSD Kingston from DealExtreme (total of ~$40 including shipping)

* What are the positive and negative effects of flashing?

Flashing generally removes the need of a Passcard to run DS ROMs from your flash cart. It thus reduces battery consumption slightly, and most flashing programs remove the Health Warning screen on startup. However, if you have Parkinson's, you might brick your DS during the process.

* Does local multiplayer and wifi work with flash carts?

WiFi both works perfectly with all flash carts. However, local games will sometimes work based on the cart being used, whether or not the DSes receiving/sending the data are flashed, and a shitload of other variables. Just try it and see if it works for yourself. However, it can be said that using two flashed DSes with two flash carts will work with all games.

::Shakes his fist, then lashes into the air in front of him:: Would you please stop that!

If you want to talk about how bad Pokemon is, start up a thread of your own in General Chat or somewhere. Just because some people are good fans of something, doesn't mean you can jump in and ruin the thread only because you don't like it. If you don't like it, watch something else. Don't like the soundtrack, listen to something else. Don't try to tell devoted fans what to do negativly to something they really like! ::Out of breath::

::Ruby is growling at foofighter::

Don't, Ruby, he's not worth it. ::Sigh::

::Ruby, stops, but is still looking at him::

Sorry about that outburst everyone...
