Well, of course, it would have been a lot better off for everyone if Ichigo had rejected the soul reaper powers. But, there would not really have been much of a story. Plus, Ichigo does good things to help people with his powers, so I feel there is nothing wrong with it.

No, he needed them to save his family at the time, so he really had no choice.

the Shirt Guy has a point, because here is the alternative story:

Ichigo decides not to take the powers, and stands up to the Hollow on his own.
Obviously, Ichigo gets OWNED and the Hollow kills his whole family, and Rukia.
The rest of the series centers around the problems a teenage corpse faces in everyday life.
